Using panels and inspectors

Many Fireworks controls are accessible in the workspace on floating, dockable panels and inspectors.

The options on an inspector typically control the characteristics of selected objects.
The options on a panel typically control document or tool characteristics.
You can organize your work environment by combining individual panels and inspectors on tabbed panels. Likewise, you can separate a panel or inspector from a tabbed panel to place it in a convenient spot in your workspace.

To show or hide a panel or inspector:

Choose the panel or inspector from the Window menu.

Most panels and inspectors have an Options pop-up menu.

To choose an option from a panel or inspector Options pop-up menu:

1 Click the right-arrow button near the top-right corner of the panel or inspector. The Options pop-up menu appears.
2 Choose an Options pop-up menu command.

Some data boxes on panels and inspectors have a pop-up menu, swatch panel, slider, or dial.

To use an option pop-up menu:

1 Click the down arrow next to the box.
2 Change the value:
Choose an option or color swatch.
Drag the slider or dial.
(Windows) Type the first letter of the option you want to choose. Press the letter repeatedly to cycle through all options beginning with that letter.

To enter information in a panel or inspector text box:

1 Click the pointer in the text box to display an insertion point.
2 Type a value.
3 Press Enter.

To combine two or more panels or inspectors:

1 Drag one floating panel or inspector over another floating panel or inspector. When the highlighted border appears on the panel underneath, release the mouse button.
2 Click any tab in the window to bring it forward.

To remove a panel or inspector from a tabbed panel:

Drag the panel or inspector away from the tabbed panel by its tab.

To hide a panel or a tabbed panel group:

Click the close box at the top of the panel or panel group window.

To hide all panels:

Choose View > Hide Panels.
Press the Tab key.

To view hidden panels:

Choose View > Hide Panels.
Press the Tab key.

Panels that were hidden when you chose Hide Panels will remain hidden when you deselect Hide Panels.

To return panels to their default positions and reset application-level preferences:

1 Quit Fireworks.
2 Delete the preferences file named Fireworks 3 Preferences:
In Windows, this file is located in the Fireworks folder.
On the Macintosh, this file is located in the System\Preferences folder.
3 Relaunch Fireworks.
